RAGS OF LIGHT

Amazing effects are achieved when water soluble fabric is used as the background for embroidery.
Unique cloth is created with free machine embroidery, automatic stitches, surface collage, and the manipulation of thread and fabric. As the embroidery stands alone once the water soluble fabric is washed away, the texture achieved can be anywhere from gossamer fine to heavily worked. Water soluble fabrics have been around for many years but now they have become very easy to use with a wide choice of fabric that is readily available. This workshop comprehensively explores ideas and techniques with soluble fabric to create a softly draping and uniquely individual wrap or scarf.
Students will be provided with notes. Suitable for beginners and intermediate.

SEA URCHINS

Taking inspiration from nature, the delightfully segmented and spherical shape of the sea urchin is the starting point for an exquisitely encrusted vessel, which can be used as an ornamental sculpture or a precious little bag. To obtain the richly encrusted surfaces, techniques such as raising and padding areas, clustering, grouping and looping cords and threads, exploring and developing textures and creating height will be used. More unusual ideas such as working within metal rings and creating organic shapes and effects with water soluble fabrics will be covered.
Students can choose to work large or small and the construction of the vessel will be fully demonstrated with different sized patterns and instructions supplied. Students will be provided with comprehensive notes.
